Contact Lenses

Over 30 million Americans wear contact lenses, according to the American Optometric Association. Unlike glasses, contact lenses move with your eyes so you can enjoy a larger field of vision with fewer distortions. You also don't have to deal with frames hovering in your peripheral vision or external lenses that fog up on cold days or get wet in the rain.

austin contact lensesThere are many different kinds of contacts, including rigid and flexible, extended wear, disposable, and planned replacement lenses. Some can be made as bifocals or in different colors. After a thorough eye exam and consultation with an experienced physician, patients who qualify for contact lenses can discuss which type is right for them. All contact lenses require special care and cleaning. You'll need to make regular follow-up visits to ensure your eyes remain healthy.

  • Rigid Gas Permeable (Hard) Contact Lens: Provides optimal vision, but may not be as comfortable as soft

Dry Eyes

austin dry eye treatmentDry eyes occurs when the eyes aren't sufficiently moisturized, leading to itching, redness and pain. The eyes may become dry and irritated because the tear ducts don't produce enough tears, or because the tears themselves have a chemical imbalance.

People usually begin experiencing dry eye symptoms as they age, but the condition can also result from certain medications, conditions or injuries.

Another option for dry eyes symptoms is punctal plugs. Odyssey Punctal Plugs supply various types, sizes, and shapes of punctal plugs. The doctor insert the plugs which helps dry eye sufferers keep their own tears in their eyes longer.

Restasis®

austin restasis dry eye treatmentRestasis® Ophthalmic Emulsion is the only prescription eye drop available to treat chronic dry eye caused by low tear production. Made by Allergan, Restasis® drops increase tear production so the eyes are better moisturized and less painful. Two drops a day in each affected eye – one drop in the morning and one at night – is all it takes. According to Allergan, patients who use Restasis® report a noticeable increase in tear production, as opposed to those using steroid drops or tear duct (punctal) plugs.

Punctal plugs can relieve dry eye symptoms when drops or ointments fail. Punctal plugs are placed in the opening of the tear ducts (called "puncta") in the eyelids to block tear drainage and keep the eyes moist. Implantation should reduce the need for artificial tear drops and increase the patient's overall comfort.

Punctal plugs come in a few different shapes and sizes, and may be placed in the lower or upper eyelid or both eyelids. The most common plugs are umbrella-shaped and made of silicone. They may be placed partially inside the tear duct or embedded entirely within the duct (Herrick plugs). A recently introduced acrylic plug called the SmartPLUG softens at body temperature and expands to custom-fit each patient's eye.

Implantation takes only a few seconds in a professional's office. In some cases, before implantation, collagen is temporarily placed in the eye to predict the effectiveness of punctal plugs.

Allergic Eye Disease

allergic eye disease austin allergic conjunctivitisAllergic eye disease, or allergic conjunctivitis, makes the eyes feel itchy, red, watery and light-sensitive and can cause swelling of the eyelids. The allergy may be seasonal, often occurring alongside hay fever, or it may occur throughout the year as a result of exposure to allergens such as dust mites, mold or animal dander. Both are very common conditions, especially for patients with family histories of asthma, eczema or rhinitis. Less frequently, people can develop allergic eye disease from wearing hard or soft contact lenses, as a complication of atopic eczema, or for other reasons.

Allergic eye disease is uncomfortable but it rarely causes injury. Treatment varies depending on the cause, history and symptoms, and may include topical or oral antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers or topical corticosteroids. Cold compresses may also relieve discomfort.

Computer Vision Syndrome

austin computer vision syndromeComputer Vision Syndrome ia a temporary condition that occurs when the eyes focuses on the computer screen for long, uninterrupted periods of time. The symptoms that occur from this includes headaches, blurred vision, neck and shoulder pain, fatigue, eye strain, dry, irritated eyes, and the difficulty in refocusing the eyes. It's unlikely that this will cause any permanent damage to your eyes and/or vision. Workstation design, lighting, and uncorrected, undercorrected vision problems can further aggravate these symptoms.

Computer glasses can be use to reduce eye strain and blurriness, which will make you feel more comfortable using the computer. It can also increase worker productivity and satisfaction in the workplace. Computer glasses are used just for viewing the computer screen and any objects around the computer workstation. It's not designed for general use or for driving.
